Kate Tuttle

Kate Tuttle is a book critic, essayist and editor. A past president of the National Book Critics Circle and judge for the National Book Award, she has edited the books pages of the Boston Globe and People Magazine. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and elsewhere. Tuttle’s author profiles include subjects such as Salman Rushdie, Susan Orlean, Nell Irvin Painter, Sloane Crosley and Patricia Lockwood. Her essays have ranged from pondering the popularity of true crime stories among women readers to recounting the year in her childhood when she strongly identified with disgraced president Richard Nixon. As an editor, she worked with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Kwame Anthony Appiah to produce the African American National Biography (Oxford) and helped launch and run the Africana.com digital magazine. A Kansas native, she now lives in New Jersey after stints in Boston and Atlanta.
